Today, Climate Hawks Vote calls upon the Climate Solutions Caucus to disband, following its Republican members’ decisive support (25-6) for the GOP tax scam, HR 1.
With today’s vote, the Climate Solutions Caucus has proven its nihilism. Caucus members cast the deciding votes to open the sacred grounds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. They cast the deciding votes for a new tax loophole for pipeline companies. They cast the deciding votes to cripple Puerto Rico’s economic future. Most of all, they cast the deciding votes to transfer $5 trillion of wealth to the corporate polluters who have been poisoning our democracy and our planet.
At Climate Hawks Vote, we’ve been concerned that the Republican members of the Climate Solutions Caucus are less climate hawks than climate peacocks, posing and strutting with false concern to protect them from constituent anger. After today, if they perpetuate the myth of a bipartisan climate solution, the Democratic members of the caucus will be providing political cover for consistent Republican votes for climate destruction.
Caucus Chair Carlos Curbelo has talked a good game about wanting to protect his Miami constituents from rising seas, but with today’s vote he’s proven he cares more about his campaign contributors’ rising profits.
We’re taking action in holding the peacocks accountable. We’ve already endorsed climate hawk Kara Eastman, running against peacock Don Bacon, who has now voted against disaster relief for Hurricane Harvey survivors AND for corporate welfare for the polluters fueling these climate disasters.
Of the 31 Republican members of the Climate Solutions Caucus, the only ones who voted NO were a handful from California, New Jersey, and New York — Darrell Issa (CA-49), Leonard Lance (NJ-07), Lee Zeldin (NY-01), Peter King (NY-02), John Faso (NY-19), and Elise Stefanik (NY-21).
