Climate Hawks Vote congratulates California Attorney General Kamala Harris on her decision to investigate Exxon Mobil. As reported by the Los Angeles Times this morning, Harris is “investigating whether ExxonMobil Corp. repeatedly lied to the public and its shareholders about the risk to its business from climate change — and whether such actions could amount to securities fraud and violations of environmental laws.”
Climate Hawks Vote cofounder RL Miller states: “We commend AG Harris for her courageous decision to act on behalf of the people of the state of California. Exxon’s climate pollution has already touched Californians’ lives, in the form of wildfires, an exceptional drought amplified by global warming, and sea level rise along the iconic California coastline. We have confidence that California’s attorney general will bring to justice those who lied about its risks.”
The Times story comes one week after a resolution authored by Miller, asking Harris to investigate, passed the Los Angeles County Democratic Party – the largest Democratic party in the state. Harris is running for US Senate and faces a critical California Democratic Party endorsement vote Feb. 27.
Climate Hawks Vote was the first organization in the nation to call on the US Attorney General Loretta Lynch to prosecute ExxonMobil for its deliberate climate deception, and has called on multiple states attorney general to take action.
