Mary Peltola is running in Alaska on a simple platform: pro-fish, pro-family, pro-freedom. During Mary’s one term in the House (2023-24), she stood up for Alaskan interests, notably introducing a bill to codify the EPA’s veto of the Pebble Mine gold project that would have devastated salmon fishing in Alaska. And now she’s running for the Senate. If she and Peggy Flanagan are both elected, they’d be the first Native American women to serve in the Senate.
Alaska is a hard state to campaign in, and a harder state for a Democrat to win – It’s huge, with few roads and many rural villages that can only be visited by small plane. Alaska natives are hardy, independent folk who don’t have much reason to like or trust Washington, DC decisions — which makes her 2022 victory all the more remarkable. Endorsements and phone calls from Lower 48 folk don’t help. But what does help Mary reach Alaska voters is money.
