US Senator from Vermont

Bernie Sanders

Bernie has taken advantage of his national audience to act as an outspoken voice for strong climate action and against the oil-soaked billionaires profiting from pollution. For that - and for his number one ranking atop our tough Senate scorecard - he deserves our very rare endorsement of an incumbent. We're endorsing him for reelection to the Senate.

We’re endorsing one of our own: Bernie Sanders for US Senate from Vermont. In 2015, Bernie was the highest scoring U.S. Senator on our climate leadership scorecard. He’s earned his endorsement by authoring tough bills — the kind that Republicans throttle but Democrats might push under a new congressional majority. This year, Bernie was a lead co-author of S.987, a bill that would take us to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. In the past, he has also introduced a million solar rooftops bill and legislation to end polluter welfare.

But it’s not just about the bills one drafts or co-signs. Bernie’s taken advantage of his national audience to act as an outspoken voice for strong climate action and against the oil-soaked billionaires profiting from pollution. He fought for carbon pricing and a declaration of a climate emergency in the DNC’s official party platform. He opposed fracking and gave a major speech highlighting climate change as a central component of his foreign policy agenda.

We very rarely endorse incumbents. Bernie Sanders has earned a Climate Hawks Vote endorsement to return to the Senate.
